Note: THE TORCH is an interview series from Entrepreneurs for Impact. We profile CEOs mitigating climate change. Our goal is to highlight their work and inspire others. As we deal with multiple crisis, from COVID and racial injustice to climate change and economic recession, we need some of this positive light in what seem like dark times. Onward and upward.
Why did you create Plantible Foods? Food is the most critical supply chain in the world, and it is currently being jeopardized by global climate change. At the same time animal agriculture is one of the biggest contributors to climate change. Taking these factors into account, we decided to build a climate change-proof food supply chain that can replace animal agriculture without forcing consumers to change their dietary preferences. Our goal is to ensure that future generations around the world can continue to have access to high quality nutrition while our production reliefs the burden on the environment that is placed on it by the current food supply chain.
Who does your company serve? We serve game changers in the food industry that are working on the development of the next generation of food products that embrace a triple bottom line approach.
What problems do you solve for your customers? We can completely replace egg whites from food applications without forcing our customers to compromise on taste, texture, or nutrition. This enables our customers to replace the most functional food ingredient by a more sustainable and allergen free plant-based protein ingredient.
How does your work contribute to mitigating climate change? The biomass we use to produce our plant-based egg white replacer is carbon negative while our ingredient is 1,000 more resource efficient (i.e., water and land) than egg whites.
What makes your company different than its competitors? We are leveraging nature’s undiscovered resources that can enhance biodiversity and thereby harness nature’s natural resources to increase the scalability and cost efficiency of our production model.
How are you rethinking your business strategy to get through the COVID crisis? How do you play both offense and defense? COVID has proven that we need to change our food supply as especially the animal agriculture supply chain showed its vulnerability. We therefore believe that offense is our best defense, and have chosen to invest heavily in R&D to accelerate our business development initiatives.
What are 2-3 things that your industry needs most to succeed, but is currently missing? Better ingredients (i.e., our company) and governmental support.
How are you finding growth capital this year? Venture capital.
When it comes to addressing climate change, how do you remain optimistic? Change takes time and requires education. Newer generations are way more away of the impact than the older generations, and are, therefore, more driven to make a change. Plus, I am doing everything in my own capabilities to make a positive impact.
What kinds of apps, databases, or software help you and your team excel? Slack, ClickUp, Excel, Email, and LabFellows
What kinds of personal habits, mindset, exercise, meditation, or scheduling help boost your productivity and increase your resilience to “fight the good fight”? Reading, listening to books, exercise, and a healthy diet
What are 1-2 quotations that keep you focused and motivated? “Hard decisions, easy life.” “Fortune favors the bold.”
What are you excited about now? Personalized nutrition and plant-based food products.
Who is inspiring you now? Who can other climate change entrepreneurs learn from? Uma Valeti, founder of Memphis Meats. People should also learn from Elon Musk: Those that want to make impact can do so when they are up for the ride and have the necessary persistence.
What question did we forget to ask, but that deserves an answer? What is driving the reluctance/hesitation to shift towards a climate change orientated lifestyle amongst consumers?
